Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, just made an announcement about the Ganga Vilas Cruise, which will be the world’s longest luxury river cruise starting in January 2023 covering a distance of approximately 4000 kilometers.
The first river journey will set off from the holy city of Varanasi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on January 10, 2023, and will conclude on March 1 in Dibrugarh, Assam, a northeastern province. The cruise ship would travel 1,100 kilometers through Bangladesh on the way to Assam, the minister said, bringing the two countries closer together.
“The world’s longest river cruise will commence its journey in Jan next year. Ganga Vilas will set sail from sacred Varanasi to Dibrugarh via Bangladesh covering 4,000 km on the two greatest rivers of India, Ganga & Brahmaputra”, Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted.
This project was made possible by the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, which has previously established commerce and transit routes connecting the two nations via the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers.
The Minister further mentioned that the Ganga Vilas cruise will travel the largest distance by the river in 50 days, visiting more than 50 tourist destinations, including World Heritage Sites, while navigating 27 different river systems. According to the Minister, this voyage will be the greatest river journey ever undertaken by a single river ship, putting Bangladesh and India on the global river cruise map.
Based on a public-private partnership (PPP) approach, the 50-day cruise ship excursion will be the first of its type. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), a governmental organization, and private companies Antara Luxury River Cruises and JM Baxi River Cruises are said to be working together on the project.
The mesmerizing “Ganga Aarti,” traveling through the Sundarban, the largest mangrove forest in the world, and stopping in at Mayong, the birthplace of “black magic” in India, will be among the cruise’s highlights. The Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly River system, the Indo-Bangla Protocol Route (Kolkata-Dhubri), and National Waterway 2 over the Brahmaputra are the three main waterways that the ship will travel through.
