The nearest airport to Tawang is Salonibari Airport in Tezpur. It would take upto 10-12 hours to cover the distance of 330kms from here. The railway station and the bus stop both are in Tezpur. It would take a 12 hours peaceful journey.

Can you enter Twang in Arunachal Pradesh just as freely?
Nope. You can’t. There is something called as the northeastern states travel permits and Twang is obviously one of them. There are 2 types of travel permits for Arunachal Pradesh. Namely,
Inner Line Permit (ILP)
Protected Area Permit (PAP)
Inner Line Permit (ILP)
It is issued for Indian citizens for 15 days. Can be extended. The ILP is enforced for 4 North eastern stares- Arunachal Pradesh , Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur. Indian tourists can move about freely in any of these places with the IPL. You are not allowed to over stay though.
How to obtain an ILP permit?
You can apply for the permit ONLINE or you can get it done by the issuing the required documents to the government authorities of Arunachal Pradesh which have offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Shillong, Guwahati, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat. The cost is 100 INR.

How to Obtain PAP?
The PAP can be acquired from All Indian Missions Abroad and from the All Foreigners Regional Registration Officers (FRRO) in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Itanagar and in Arunachal Pradesh government offices. The duration will be 30 days and it cannot be extended. Just no!
Requirements of PAP
The permit holder should enter or exit the north-eastern states by air only.
The permit holders can travel in the north eastern states by road or by air.
The permit is allowed only in the specific tourist route.
The permit is allowed to only designated places.
First off, PAP cannot be applied ONLINE. The foreign national are advised to register from the tour operations in Arunachal Pradesh. The cost will be 30 USD and you are required to enclose 2 copies of your passport and 2 passport size photographs.

Permits for Tawang
You need an Inner line permit, if you are an Indian citizen. You can apply online and the charges are 150 INR to 200 INR. The approval takes 7-8 days.
The never ending conflict
The recent conflicts in Tawang are about the region being in the Indo-China border. The region has been a hotspot from the post independence times. Tawang shines as a beacon on the line drawn by the British during their raj,that is McMahon line.
