According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) annual report, “Road Incidents in India 2021,” more than 4.12 lakh accidents were reported in 2021, and more than 1.58 lakh of those occurred between 3 pm and 9 pm.
According to the data, 20.7 percent of all accidents in the nation occurred between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm, when the most traffic accidents occurred. The second-highest percentage of accidents nearly 18% occurred between 3 and 6 o’clock in the evening.

According to government data, the safest time is between 12 am to 6 am, when less than 10% of accidents occurred and have been reported.
Most accidents and deaths:
According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways’ annual report, “Road Accidents in India, 2021,” Uttar Pradesh had the most number of fatalities due to road accidents on the national highways. While on the other hand, the majority of road accidents on national highways occurred in Tamil Nadu in 2021.
In addition to describing the spatial and chronological pattern of road accidents, the report stressed that rural areas were more commonly affected by road deaths than urban areas.
As a result, it stated that in 2021, “about 69 % of road accident fatalities occurred in rural areas, while metropolitan areas accounted for 31 percent of all fatalities in the country.”
According to the report, over 1.5 lakh persons died and more than 3.8 lacks were injured in road accidents in India in 2021. The age group with the highest rate of fatalities related to road accidents was 18 to 45 years old, which accounted for nearly 67% of all fatalities.
Report comparisons:
Since 2017, between 3 pm to 9 pm has been the recorded time for more than 35% of all accidents. Other than in 2020, when there was a nationwide lockdown due to a COVID-19 outbreak, India recorded more than 85,000 automobile accidents from 6 pm to 9 pm every year between 2017 and 2021.
According to data on road accidents by month, January 2021 was the most (40,305), then March (39,491). However, the months with the highest traffic-related fatalities were March (14,579) and January (14,575).
According to the study, traffic accidents in all of India killed 1,53,972 lives in 2021, which is a record high since 2011. That indicated there were 18 fatalities each hour, or 422 reported deaths per day.
In contrast, compared to the figures from 2019, there were 8.1% fewer road accidents and 14.8% fewer injuries in 2021. In comparison to the same time in 2019, the fatalities rose by 1.9% in 2021.
India came in second place after the US in terms of the number of accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries. Iran and Japan were the nations listed after India.
