In the midst of the Sabari Hills’ forests, there lies a significant pilgrimage site called Sabarimala Temple. After defeating the monster known as “Mahishi,” Lord Ayyappa is said to have meditated here. 41 days known as Mandala Kalam or Mandala Masam is devoted to the Sabarimala shrine.

The Sabarimala Temple in Kerala, a revered Swamy Ayyappan temple, is located at a height of 914 metres. Mandala Kalam, also known as Mandala Masam, is the main pilgrimage season for the well-known Sabarimala Temple. According to the conventional Malayalam calendar, Mandala Kalam marks the start of the pilgrimage to the hill shrine from the 1st of the Vrishchikam month & finishes on the eleventh day of the Dhanu month. This period falls between December and January on the Gregorian calendar. Millions of worshipers from all over the world swarm the Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple during the 41-day Mandala Kalam festival.

Devotees observe vrata or penance several days before the Mandala Kalam begins. During the Mandala Kalam (41 days), devoted followers undertake a stringent fast as well. In addition to abstaining from sex, they wear a special “Rudraksha” mala and refrain from eating meat.

The Mandala Kalam begins as people enter the Sabarimala Temple dressed in black dhotis. The “Irumudi” or “Ketunira” bundle, which is made of cloth and is divided into two parts, is also carried by these devotees. It is filled with a holy coconut, grains, and ghee. For Lord Ayyappa, the “Irumudi” is offered as a sacrifice. As Guruvayur, it is customary to visit the Shri Krishna Temple as soon as the Mandala Kalam starts.

After the 41 days of the pilgrimage season, the Lord Ayyappa Temple is closed for three days before being reopened for darshan on the fourth day. There is no caste or creed discrimination in the Sabarimala Temple, therefore people of any religion are welcome. However, during the Mandala Kalam period, female devotees between the ages of 10 and 50 are not allowed to enter the Sabarimala Temple. The celebrations of “Makaravilakku” mark the end of the popular Sabarimala Temple’s yearly pilgrimage season, which lasts from mid-November to mid-January. During Mandala Kalam, millions of devotees travel to the Sabarimala Shrine to give Lord Ayyappa their sincere prayers.
