When measured from earth’s center and not from sea level, Mount Chimborazo is the highest mountain on the planet. Rising to an impressive 20,702 feet Mount Chimborazo is the closest place to moon on Earth. As this supreme mountain sits on the bulge of the earth near an equator, makes it the closest point to the space.
Many hikers and climbers have come and gone. Mount Chimborazo hasn’t disappointed any of them until now. Many tourism hosts will arrange a climb to the peak. Gazing up at the full moon from the closest point on earth is a must to do bucket list travel goals.
How to reach?
You can start your trip from Riobamba, an Andean city located on the Avenue of Volcanoes, 120 miles (200 km) away from the Ecuadorian capital, Quito. You can take a cab from Riobamba to Chimborazo Reserve. Or the bus station in the south of Quinto have busses running up and down to the reserve. You need to take a bus heading to Guaranda and on the way, drop off at the reserve.
I would have listed Mount Everest as the second but I know, y’ll are not going to climb it. Not to just look at the moon. But if you want to look at the moon from the highest point on earth (from sea level) then please go ahead. You need to plan for a particular day when the moon is in it’s Zenith. A perigee or a Supermoon. I won’t blame you if you forget about the reality after moon gazing from over these two places.
Corcovado Hill in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
I know this one is a little dramatic but the Corcovado is also a symbol in Brazilian culture. Probably one of Rio’s proudly recognized landmarks, the Corcovado is a narrow hill summit that reaches up to the imposing statue of Jesus Christ known as Christ the Redeemer.
This should be the most authentic places to gaze up the moon. The mount also overlooks the bay of Rio de Janeiro along with the backdrop of other mountains, Atlantic Ocean and the marvelous statue. What else do you need!

The hill is accessible from road and cog railway.
Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, USA
Arizona is known for being a home for most of the darkest place on earth. Stargazing is a popular activity across Arizona. You will find a plenty of organizations and camps arranging it for you. According to me, moon from the iconic Grand Canyon would be spectacular.
The idea that you are looking at the moon from a canyon and somewhere in the ocean, the same moon is responsible for creating its tides. That appeals to me. It is both romantic and philosophical.
How to reach?
You can go there by air, by road and by train. You need to reach the South Rim. From there every more of transportation is available to the National Park.
Ladakh in India
A popular tourist destination in India known for its scenic beauty. Snow clad rocky mountains, blue valleys and snow leopards. Ladakh is also known for less light traffic. This makes Ladakh a unique destination for Moon gazing.
How to Reach?
You can go there by flight or by road. The capital Leh has an airport. From there you rent a car or a bike. By road, you can reach from Manali (Himachal Pradesh) or Srinagar (Kashmir).
Victoria falls in Zimbabwe
Not many people know that, the Victoria falls was one of the seven wonders of the world. In Matetsi Private Game Reserve in Zimbabwe, you can participate in a guided full moon tour across the waterfalls. Take in the wild gushing of Victoria along with the full moon lighting the water. If you are lucky, you will see a Lunar rainbow.
The thundering Victoria Falls which is one among the largest water fall curtain in the world creates a constant stream of mist against her wake. Which in turn creates a magical rainbow. These surreal rainbows are only seen at night and during the time of the full moon. One of the best places to watch the moon. Isn’t this the most romantic and best place to go moon gazing?

You can go there by flight. The Victoria falls airport and the Livingstone airport are the closest to the falls. The Victoria Falls town is the nearest city. If you want to explore the falls from the ground, you need to go to Livingstone (second closest city). There you can get lost in the rainforest as well.
