The Airports Authority Of India has introduced paperless entry at a few airports starting of this Thursday in an attempt to improve air travel. As part of this scheme, airports will implement “DigiYatra,” a facial recognition programme, to confirm identity of the passengers travelling. Customers won’t need to carry both their ID card & boarding permit, as a result.
The programme will be introduced at seven airports in its initial phase, starting with Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi and further with Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, and Vijayawada by March 2023. The technology will then be used all around the nation for hassle-free travel.
Currently, this facial recognition facility is available at only below three airports:
- Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi
- Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore
- Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi
How the facial recognition technology with DigiYatra works?
The Digi-Yatra smartphone app must be used by travellers to scan the QR code on their boarding pass in order to create travel documents using their Aadhaar and submit a photo of themselves, which is the mandatory process to enjoy facial recognition technology. When they scan their boarding passes at the airport, the e-gate will take a picture of them and compare it to the data they submitted for security reasons. After the passenger’s identity has been verified, the gates will open, allowing the traveller to go to the security checkpoint & boarding gate where their face will be matched once again. The passenger can proceed and board the aircraft after verification smoothly.
What are the Benefits of using this facial recognition technology?
According to DigiYatra, passengers would go through multiple checkpoints at the airport utilizing paperless and contactless processing. Passenger’s identity would be verified using their facial features which are connected to their boarding pass. With this technology, all checkpoints, such as airport entry, security checkpoints, airplane boarding, etc., will automatically process passenger entries based on facial recognition technology making their travel smooth and more advanced.
According to Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, “Personally Identifiable Information” (PII) is not stored in any central storage systems giving priority to passengers’ privacy. Passenger’s ID & travel credentials are kept in a secure wallet on the passenger’s smartphone, and all submitted data will be deleted from servers 24 hours after use using blockchain technology.
